It didn't take long for the iron bug to bite and dreams of Muscle Beach to swell; soon he moved to Santa Monica and in to the Muscle House, owned by Joy Crettoz, who nicknamed Bill "Peanuts" after watching him eat peanuts, peanut butter and peanut oil daily for weight gain.

Writes Dan Martin about Peanuts' Westside Gym:

"It was easy to dig the old Westside gym because it was, in fact, a home gym. Just a plain old garage. Some of the strongest power lifters, football players, and field event studs lifted there. Nothing fancy, because it really wasn't needed. Squats, box squats, power cleans, dead lifts, dead lifts off blocks, barbell rows, bench presses, steep angle bench press, and seated dumbbell presses made up the list of the exercises done there."

Muscle, Smoke & Mirrors!

http://www.musclesmokeandmirrors.com

Get the awesome new book by Randy Roach, Muscle, Smoke & Mirrors! The young man defeated the reigning Canadian strongman by lifting a granite boulder weighing over 400 pounds. After spending some time as a lumberjack, Cyr became a professional strongman, touring all over the United States and Europe.

At the height of his career, Cyr stood only 5'10" tall but he weighed over 300 pounds and had a 60" chest when it was expanded (55.2" normally). Several of his weightlifting feats and strongman stunts have been exaggerated over the years but some were documented and are still considered impressive today. He was the "Dean of American Strongmen" and probably the last of the living legends from the golden age of strongmen.

In the late '80s, "Milo" was still able to squat with 300 pounds. He would defy anyone to hold him down while performing sit-ups. As a matter of fact, at the Oldetimers Reunion in New York City, on May 13, 1987, he requested to perform - having someone jump on his "abs" from the position of three tables high. To his disappointment, due to the sequences of the evening's program we denied his request. At about 170 pounds, Milo's "abs" were still rock hard. In his prime years, he performed this stunt nightly at his wrestling performances.

William Pagel - Circus Strongman!

Herr William Pagel was one of the greatest showmen of his day, and knew what the public wanted. He was German by birth (born in 1878) and after an early career at sea settled in Australia where he worked in a restaurant as dishwasher and bouncer. Extremely well-built (about 6 foot tall and between 280-300 lbs, with enormous forearms), he soon joined a circus as strongman and eventually made enough capital to buy his own tent, holding 200 people. In February 1905 he sailed for Natal, and began touring South African centres. He developed his own animal training capabilities, particularly with lions, and carried the scars to prove it. Pagel was also famous for his tug o' war acts with four horses or alternatively with two elephants.

He was renowned for carrying no stick or whip when in the ring, relying, as he himself said, on "no more formidable instruments than patience, kindness and love, to gain a high degree of ascendancy over the minds of the most savage of the beasts of prey. Many people imagine that when an animal is taught to perform a feat, it is coerced into doing something foreign to its instincts and nature. This is not so. Animals possess aptitudes just as human beings, and they vary almost as greatly. The trainer observes some peculiar aptitude in an animal and guides and develops it carefully, encouraging him by every imaginable means until he is able to perform what is for that species of animal an unusual feat."

There was scarcely a type of circus animal which Herr Pagel didn't train. In 1910, a list of animals he brought into Natal from Transvaal included 5 horses, 9 ponies, 2 zebras, 1 camel, 4 elephants, 6 tigers, 3 lions, 5 leopards, 3 polar bears and a kangaroo.

Pagel married Mary DINGDALE, a Yorkshirewoman some years older than himself, who kept her eye on the box-office and vied with her husband for colourful and courageous personality. She had a pet black-maned lion which travelled with her wherever she went, ensuring good publicity for the show. Madam Pagel died aged 74 in 1939. Matysek attempts a 252 lb., one hand overhead lift, on Dec. 18th, 1914. He was barely unsuccessful on that day, which Alan Calvert thinks is because of the thin 1" bar he used. He was 80.

Mr. Jones died of natural causes, his son William Edgar Jones said.

Mr. Jones was a rough-and-tumble character who had six wives, a nearly lifelong smoking habit and an affection for exotic animals like rattlesnakes and crocodiles, which he kept at his farm, the younger Mr. Jones said.

He tinkered with exercise equipment for more than 20 years before creating his first Nautilus machine, called the Blue Monster, in the late 1960s. Mr. Jones presented the equipment at a Mr. America contest in California and started Arthur Jones Productions to sell the equipment. The company’s name was later changed to Nautilus, because the cam, or gear, that was crucial to the machine’s success resembled a nautilus.
Mr. Jones’ invention led to the “machine environment” that is prevalent today in health clubs

Cool Arthur Jones pic!

A cool picture of Arthur Jones (Nautilus fame) feeding one of his elephants! Like many old time wrestlers, he appeared in sideshows where he wrestled anyone who dared. These challengers were typically the biggest, strongest, and sometimes the meanest folks in town. They included lumberjacks, farmers, long shore men, and other assorted men confident in their strength. They did not stand a chance against the likes of Emil, as he was known as "Ursus the Strong" because he also wrestled bulls by the horns. Even at a late age he continued training, using thick handled dumbbells and barbells well into his 70's.

Old Time Louis Cyr Poster

The gentleman Strongman, is faithfully represented in the Humpty Dumpty Circus. After you have finished these reps, stand up and continue with 10 moderately fast reps, cheating if necessary but trying to limit the cheating to the last 2 reps.Sit down again and, with the aid of a spotter to lift the barbell to arms’ length overhead on each rep, lower it in negative fashion under your own power to your shoulders. Do this for 10 negative reps. Next do 5 half-reps in which you press the barbell from your shoulders to the top of your head. Now press the bar from your shoulders to approximately eye level for a big triple. Grab an unloaded bar and do 5 fast reps to ease the lactic-acid burn in the muscle. All these procedures constitute one set, performed continuously without any rest-pauses whatsoever. The number of sets you do will depend on whether you are an intermediate or advanced bodybuilder and your current level of conditioning. Intermediate-level bodybuilders and powerlifters can do 5 to 7 sets while advanced trainers can do 7 to 10.Schedule 2Ted usually works the behind-the-neck press twice a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays. He recommends the following 3 optional workout cycles: There you have all the elements necessary to increase your behind-the-neck press the Ted Arcidi way. Adopt the attitude of a future champion. Think success, think big, set specific goals, develop an intense desire to win, and most of all, develop a positive self-image.

Arcidi - Behind the Neck Press!

Starting PointTed does the behind-the-neck press either standing (his favorite method) or seated. He likes to use an Olympic bar for this particular exercise rather than a conventional exercise bar. He uses a palms-down or pronated grip approximately 6 to 10 inches wider than his shoulders – or whatever grip is necessary to allow his massive forearms to be as nearly parallel as possible. This grip of course is determined by the flexibility in his shoulder region. He doesn’t clean the bar from the floor to his shoulders at the beginning of each set. Doing so would be a real drain on his energy, especially when he begins to handle some top poundages. As a matter of fact Ted told me he could never have done 315-plus pounds in this exercise for 10 solid reps or a mind-boggling 400-plus pounds for 2 or 3 reps if he had to clean the bar to his shoulders for even one set! The best way he has found to begin this exercise is to merely take the bar off the squat rack (adjustable for either the standing or seated version) at the beginning of each set and then replace it on the rack when he has completed his set. With the bar resting on his herculean upper trapezius muscles, the massive Arcidi takes a deep breath, holds it, and begins pressing the ponderous barbell to lockout or until his elbows are fully extended. When the bar is extended overhead, he drops his shoulders, contracts his lats (putting leverage on medial delts, not traps), thrusts his chest forward, and tightens his abs. At two-thirds of lockout he expels the air in his lungs. Sometimes in his training cycle he uses what I term double oxygen breathing. He inhales at the beginning of the rep, holds the air, breathes out at two-thirds of lockout, breathes in again at the completion of the lockout, holds the breath as he lowers the barbell to the starting position, then exhales. This double oxygen breathing technique stabilizes the chest and associated rib-cage areas so that proper action takes place in the shoulder girdle and joint regions.

If you have ever had the opportunity to attend one of Ted Arcidi’s powerlifting and nutritional seminars, you will have noticed he always did his behind-the-neck presses standing. More balance is required in this lifting style, and Ted’s tremendous reserve of strength in the legs, back and abdominals serves him well for this endeavor. He always balances his body on the balls of his feet, never toward the heels. His feet are usually parallel and at least shoulder width apart with one slightly ahead of the other. He looks straight ahead during every rep, never allowing himself to create balance problems by looking up or down. Occasionally he hits a sticking point in the last couple of reps in a set. When he notices the weight beginning to slow down, he bows into the weight slightly with his hips, shortening the height of his actual physical structure. In this way he seems to bypass the sticking point. Now that you know the exact execution of the behind-the-neck press as Ted prefers it, I would like to include a couple of training schedules which will release your reservoir of untapped strength.

Dead Man's Elbows

On March 3, 1985, Ted became the first man in powerlifting history to officially bench-press 700.5 pounds. He made that APF & USPF world-record lift at Gus Rethwisch's Budweiser World Record Breakers in Hawaii. Then, on September 30, 1990, after 5 1/2 years away from competition, he made the comeback of the decade and stormed the APF Bench Press Invitational in Keene, New Hampshire, hoisting a monstrous 718.1 lbs effortlessly for yet another world record. Ted Arcidi then busted heads with another member of the 700 club, Anthony Clark, at Joe Weider's IFBB Mr. Olympia Bench Press Challenge, which took place in Florida on September 14, 1991. At that event Ted benched a gigantic 725 lbs for a sanctioned WPC & APF world record.
.
Shortly after that record-shattering performance, however, the 5'11", 295 pound Hercules received a phone call from Powerlifting USA magazine informing him that the sanctioning powers were calling his 725-pound record a three-fourths lift because he couldn't lock out his arms. Ted was devastated. With bench-pressing records in the 700-pound category soaring to heavens, he could have dropped a bomb on the powerlifting community and pulled out of competition forever, but that's not the way he's built...
.
As it turned out, Ted Arcidi has been lifting with what he referred to as "dead man's elbows" for some time when the Mr. Olympia event took place.

Boss of the Bench Press!

On November 29, 1996, at a special strength event in Boston, Ted Arcidi blasted up nine full range-of-motion reps in the bench press with 500 pounds for a world "rep" record, and all without the aid of a bench shirt. Yet, when thrust into the world of pro wrestling, he found that he hated it and dreaded each and every match.
"[W]hat pained me the most about my matches was having to contend with the 'violence for the sake of violence,' both while training and performing," Hepburn told his biographer Tom Thurston in Strongman: The Doug Hepburn Story. "Hits, slams, bruises, dislocations and breaks were common occurrences that I abhorred -- the giving, worse than the receiving."
"He was just passing through in wrestling. He was a very nice, kind person," Mad Dog Vachon explained to SLAM! Wrestling.
Strongman: The Doug Hepburn Story is told in an unique, first-person narrative, where the author Thurston tried as best he could to capture was the man was really like. "He had such an unique way of expressing himself," said Thurston. "He was almost like a W.C. Fields at times. He would sit down in a room and absolutely dominate it, just because of the way that he talked with a sense of humor. I thought to myself, I want to try to capture that. That was how I tried to do it with the first person [narrative]."

Another Hepburn Moment!

During his prime Doug weighed 280 and was reportedly capable of the following lifts:

Press off the rack: 440 lbs
Two-Hand Dumbbell Press: 175s
Press Behind The Neck: 350 lbs
Two Hand Barbell Curl: 260 lbs
Wide Grip Bench Press: 580 lbs
Jerk Press: 500 lbs
Crucifix: 200 lbs
Squat: 760 lbs
Deadlift without straps: 705 lbs

Deadlift with straps: 740 lbs

Hepburn 550!

Hepburn was the first man to officially bench 400, 450, and 500 lbs. Ultimately, he would pause 525, 550, and 560 lbs during the early to mid 1950's. This would be topped off by a touch and go with 580 using a collar to collar grip and a near miss with 600 lbs. He was also a great squatter: it was his 630 lb world record deep knee bend that Paul Anderson exceeded in late 1952. Doug would later improve to 760 lbs.

Casey's 617 lb.
